The car has to be level and I always have a fire extinguisher handy, a backfire could be disastrous. You can remove the top of the carburetor (air horn) when the car is running to measure the fuel level in the bowel, maybe your fuel level is not correct as well. Weather it was extra pressure building up in the fuel line when the engine stopped and started to heat up or the needle and seat leaked all the time but when the car was running it didn't make any difference because it was very minimal and the engine could cope with the extra fuel.
